Rumours of unease in the military grow

Government unease at the rumours of dissidence emanating from the armed forces appears to be growing. Following the cancellation, for security reasons, of the country's independence day parade, the local press speculated that President Hugo Chávez feared an attempt on his life from some groups within the military. Although Chávez has vigorously denied any such concerns, his decision to grant the military a massive pay rise appeared to belie his words
